It’s a sport played by 500 million people around the world, and aged just 21 – the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen became number 1.  At just 13 he produced a draw in a game against Gary Kasparov (see video here), a game which shook the world of Chess and catapulted Carlsen onto the forefront of the global stage as an undisputed modern-day prodigy of the game.

Invented in 1974, the Rubik’s Cube is a 3D mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture – Erno Rubik (still alive today and living in Hungary). Originally called the “Magic Cube”, the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold in 1980, and as of January 2009 over 350 million cubes had been sold worldwide. It is widely considered to be the world’s best-selling toy.

The world record for solving the cube is 5.66 seconds, the world record for solving it blindfolded (memorising it first) is 28.80 seconds, the world record for solving it with just one hand is 9.53 seconds – and in 2008 the Hungarian Milán Baticz solved 4786 cubes in a 24-hour period.  See more records here and full information on the cube here.

MI5 have said of the story of Eddie Chapman, “If his story were written as fiction, it would almost certainly be dismissed as improbable”.  It is an incredible tale of a man who crossed and double-crossed his way through World War 2 – spying first FOR the Germans, and then AGAINST them – in a five-year web of international deceit and duplicity.

The Rosetta Stone is an Ancient Egyptian artifact which was instrumental in advancing modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. The stone is made up of three translations of a single passage: two in Egyptian language scripts (hieroglyphic and Demotic) and one in classical Greek. It was created in 196 BC, discovered by the French in 1799 at Rosetta and contributed greatly to the deciphering of the principles of hieroglyph writing in 1822 by the British scientist Thomas Young and the French scholar Jean-François Champollion.

The stone has been on public display at The British Museum since 1802.
